WILLIAM S. RICE, INC.

The following information on William S. Rice, Inc. was sent to me from the Adams town historian, Sue Herse, and was originally published in The Jefferson County Journal and the 1925 Adams High School Annual.

A History of W. S. Rice, Inc.
As published in The Jefferson County Journal

As of 1944, without doubt, the outstanding business in Adams for the past 40 years has been W. S. Rice truss business.  In its most prosperous years it has had on the payroll a total of 160 people, mostly from Adams and vicinity.  In 1944 it employed about 90.

Established in 1886 in Smithville by William Seward Rice as an out-growth of the Capt. Collings plant, it made a rapid growth through mail order advertising and in 1898 Mr. Rice moved the business to Adams and established it on North Main Street hill just beyond his residence.

Soon after the grammar school was moved into the old Adams Collegiate building, which was purchased by Adams school district.  This left the old grammar school on the corner of Bond and Wardwell streets unoccupied and in 1903 Mr. Rice bought the building and moved his factory into it.  The factory building on the hill was moved to the new location and formed the annex on the south side of the building.

Here the business continued to prosper until 1920 when the wooden structure was completely destroyed by fire.  The same year a modern brick building was erected and the business was continued as before.

Mr. Rice was the dominant controlling force in the business during his lifetime and since the death the management passed into the hands of his son, C. Kent Rice, who ably carried on the traditions of the business.

The Rice mail order business raised the classification of the Adams Post office to Class 1 at one time.
